Company Profile
Company Overview
BloodSource is committed to grow with the communities we serve and to consistently provide a readily available, safe blood supply. It does this by doing what’s right: Meeting the needs of patients, physicians, hospitals and donors.
Blood donations provide life-saving treatments to accident victims, surgery patients, cancer patients and many others in need. Thanks to the generosity of donors throughout Northern and Central California, BloodSource is the source of blood used by over 40 hospitals in 25 counties – from Merced to the Oregon border, from Vacaville to Lake Tahoe. And, we are the source around the Nation, even around the world, for other blood centers that simply cannot meet the needs of their own communities.
At BloodSource, the staff remains steadfast in its commitment to collect, test, process and deliver the safest blood and blood components when there is the need.
Since 1948, BloodSource has been committed to doing what’s right. Operating under the original name, Sacramento Medical Foundation, it grew from a single blood bank in Sacramento to one of the premier blood centers in the world. This would not have been possible without the thousands of donors and volunteers who give their time, talent, and life-giving blood
In spring of 2002, the organization changed its name to better reflect its work and to bring all operations under one name. The new name, “BloodSource,” reflects who it really has been all along: the source of blood and transfusion medicine support to hospitals in the area; the source of advancement in blood services technology; and the source of help where needed beyond our state and national borders.
The growth, and subsequent name change, has been the natural evolution of always doing what's right for the community. In 2002, BloodSource set the long-range vision to grow the organization to meet not only the needs of patients within its service area in Northern and Central California, but, when needed, to supply blood components across the nation. Not only has BloodSource been called upon to provide this expanded service, we believe it is the right thing to do. BloodSource is the source of blood and blood components for more than 40 hospitals in Northern and Central California and is a member of numerous domestic and international medical organizations.
BloodSource operates a variety of programs for the people in its area. Among them are:
Blood Collection: To meet the daily demand for blood, BloodSource must collect an average of 700 units of blood a day. Half of the supply comes from donors who visit community donor centers and half comes from people who sign up for mobile blood drives at their workplace, school, or other convenient location.
Marrow/blood stem cell transplants: Since 1987, the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) has facilitated more than 20,000 unrelated marrow transplants. Through BloodSource, more than 68,000 volunteers have given blood samples to join NMDP’s registry of potential donors.
Specialized testing: As one of the premier blood centers in the world, BloodSource is consistently one of the first to develop or adopt new and specialized testing. BloodSource operates the most sophisticated blood center laboratory in the state, serving its needs and, as needed, the needs of other blood centers in California.
